Maureen Ness
Maureen Ness paints in watercolours out of the Open Studio location at the Art Centre Cedar Hill in Victoria. Her inspiration comes from her west coast travels around Vancouver Island. Her paintings are realistic leaning and reveal her passion with colour, contrast and nature. The vivid contrasts and well-cast imagination shown in her work are blended with an up close view which creates a scene of dreamy glazing.Maureen sells original paintings, limited edition giclée reproductions, and framed prints. She also does privately commissioned works.Maureen Ness grew up in Victoria, British Columbia and has spent most of her life developing her unique talent in visual art. The influence of international landscapes can be seen in her early work.
Maureen began painting at the young age of eight years old. She works with acrylic, watercolours and oil paints as her mediums of choice. She continues to explore both realism and expressionistic approaches to her work ever since.
Maureen has been fortunate to study painting with a few expert painters both locally and in France.
The Artist’s Work
Nature
I love looking through ideas and experience creatively when I contribute. I paint from the top down from the sky, then the mountains, then the hills, then the ocean, beaches and trees in the foreground. I look out the window sometimes to seek the color of the shadows and the different greens in the trees, but when I get ready to paint I just close my eyes and imagine a scene. I’ll get an inspiration from the nature photographs I take of the beautiful places I explore here on Vancouver Island. I pick a particular photograph then start painting; when I am painting in the studio I forget everything, everything and go into a meditative state being one with the subject matter, paint, brushes and canvas.
Flowers
When I take a flower in my hand and really look at it, it’s my world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else… Nobody really sees a flower – really – it is so small – we haven’t time – and to see takes time… So I said to myself – I’ll paint what I see –
